What's the Difference Between Single Impact Hemets and Multiple Impact Helmets?

This round of FAQ's focuses on helmets. We are commonly asked what the difference between a CPSC certified single impact helmet and a non certified multiple impact helmet is. We got an answer from Dan McCashin, Co-Founder of S-One Helmet Company.

I think we first need to dispel this concept of Single impact vs. multiple impact because it is not that simple.

The Safest helmets are CPSC certified helmets.

They are just as much multiple impact as the Soft foam helmets but they can absorb much more aggressive impacts.

Anytime any helmet whether it is soft or hard foam takes an impact it is compromised in that area and it is less effective in absorbing shock at that particular impact spot.

Both helmets can take multiple impacts but are far less effective if not effective at all if they are repeatedly hit in the same spot.

So the real debate should Soft foam Non certified helmets vs. Hard Foam CPSC certified helmets.

Certified helmets take more impact and are safer than Soft foam helmets.
